If you've wondered what's next near the new I-69 bridge, city and county leaders have an idea. At a special called meeting Tuesday, Henderson Fiscal Court heard a plan to widen Tillman-Bethel Road so roughly 120 acres of city-owned land can be developed.
The development land covers roughly 120 acres

Mayor Brad Staton and Missy Vanderpool, executive director of Henderson Economic Development, hope to see hotels, apartments, single-family homes, restaurants and retail there. Developers keep raising the same concern: limited access from I-69 to properties along U.S. 60.
- Split: city and county would share costs equally
- Upkeep: the city would maintain the road once rebuilt
- Lanes: three on the parcel's south side, two on the east
- Still needed: easements along the road
- Votes: none cast at the special called meeting

Vanderpool didn't have a cost figure at the meeting, but Judge-Executive Brad Schneider said an estimate is $1 million.

“I don’t see this as a gamble at all,” Staton said. "I see this as more of an investment than a gamble for sure." Staton also said the city has created an incentive package to spur building owners to fill empty buildings. The city commission will hear the same plan next week, and water retention and flooding would be studied as part of it.
